Procedures finalised for use of VAR in Serie A. IFAB met with FIGC in Rome on Wednesday

The initial procedures for the definitive use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) in Serie A next season have been finalised. IFAB gave it the green light after a meeting at the FIGC headquarters yesterday, during which all parameters linked to the Italian experimentation were verified.

IFAB Secretary Lukas Brud and Technical Director David Elleray, who where welcomed by FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio and CEO Michele Uva, met also with Roberto Rosetti and Nicola Rizzoli, who are respectively the Project Leader and Referee Instructor for the VAR project. Together with the CEO of Lega Serie A, Marco Brunelli, they presented the test results from last season. IFAB officially thanked the Italian Federation for having adhered to the experimentation. This will allow for further information to help improve the protocol, before a final decision will then be made on VAR, considered for now by IFAB as an experimental project.

In addition to highlighting the quality of the Italian project, it was also noted the synergy between the FIGC, Lega Serie A and also the Italian Refereeing Association, praising particularly the model of collaboration between those on the pitch. Over the last few days, Rosetti has been meeting with all Serie A squads to help explain to the players, coaches and directors how VAR will work. Furthermore, prior to the start of the season, a press conference will also be held to explain the main points of this experimentation, particularly for the general public. This will help fans both in and outside the stadium understand this new project.

Following the latest tests carried out over the past few days at the training camp in Sportilia, both CAN A and CAN B referees responded well to VAR and shown great willingness in using the it. So now, it can start. Serie A is ready for VAR to make its mark and it will be used during the first game on Saturday 19th August between Juventus and Cagliari.
