The Under-19 National Team will face hosts Finland during their European Championship opener, with the tournament set to take place from 16th to 29th July. The draw for the competition took place in Vaasa today, with the Azzurrini being grouped alongside Finland, Portugal and Norway in Group A. Meanwhile, Group B is made up of Turkey, Ukraine, France and England. “They are two rather balanced groups,” said Coach Paolo Nicolato. “The big teams, such as Portugal, England and France have all be split into two groups. Our opening match against Finland will be a bit of an unknown for us, but we’ll give it our all in looking to reach the next round.”

Nicolato’s side qualified for the competition after a run of five wins and a draw, beating the likes of Germany and Spain along the way. With the Euros now fast approaching, the Coach warns that there could be some surprises: “Games will be played on artificial pitches and this is something we’re not used to,” Nicolato added. “Other than Portugal, we’ll also face Norway, who reached the competition after securing a shock triumph over Germany. Whatever happens, my team is ready to give their all usual, focusing on their own football and without worrying who’s in front of them.”

The top two from each group will qualify for the semi-finals, in a tournament that will have five places at the 2019 Under-20 World Cup at stake. The four semi-finalists and the winner of the third-place play-off will all advance to the World Cup from 25th May to 16th June next year.
