Happy Birthday to Ciro Ferrara and Christian Maggio!

Ciro Ferrara, former Napoli and Juventus defender, was born in Naples on 11 February 1967.

He made his Serie A debut with the Partenopei on 5 May 1985 in a home game against Juventus, and became one of the central figures of Napoli’s glory years in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1991, after the departure of Diego Maradona, he was named captain of his hometown club. Highly sought after by Lippi, he joined Juventus in 1994 and reached the highest levels of club football. He would remain with the Turin-based outfit until the end of his playing career after the 2004/05 season. His trophy haul at club level is certainly one to be admired: six Scudetti, two Coppa Italia titles, five Italian Supercups, one Champions League, one UEFA Cup, one European Supercup and one Intercontinental Cup.

He made his Italy debut on 19 June 1987 in a friendly win against Argentina (3-1) in Zurich. He won bronze at Italia 90 and silver at Euro 2000. He made a total of 49 appearances for the Azzurri.

Ferrara shares his birthday with Christian Maggio, who was born in Montecchio Maggiore (Vicenza) on 11 February 1982. A full-back able to play on both wings, he is currently playing for Lecce.

He made his top flight debut on 1 October 2000 in a Vicenza shirt, in a 2-0 defeat away to AC Milan. After spells with Fiorentina and Treviso, he developed further in a two-year stint at Sampdoria between 2006 and 2008. He then joined Napoli, with whom he made his Europa League and Champions League debuts. He moved to Benevento in summer 2018.

He first played for Italy on 19 November 2008, in a friendly against Greece in Athens (1-1). With the Azzurri, he finished runner-up at Euro 2012 and third at the Confederations Cup in 2013, and won 34 caps for his country.
