FIGC’s condolences for the passing of Antonio Juliano, a 1968 European Champion

The FIGC and President Gabriele Gravina would like to express their condolences for the passing of Antonio Juliano at the age of 80. Juliano made history with Napoli, wearing the shirt for 17 seasons from 1961 to 1978. After finishing his playing career with a stint at Bologna, he went on to work for the Partenopei as a director.

At international level, he was a member of the Azzurri squad that won the 1968 European Championship. 'Totonno' Juliano started the first of the two matches in the final against Yugoslavia; that game finished in a draw on 8 June 1968, meaning a replay was required two days later. Two years later, he was also part of the Italy contingent that headed to the 1970 World Cup. That tournament saw the Azzurri finish second after losing to Brazil in the final, during which Juliano came on as a substitute 15 minutes from time. He was also a member of Italy’s 1966 and 1974 World Cup squads.

“A key figure in one of the most glorious pages of Italian football history has left us,” said FIGC President Gabriele Gravina. “He was a European Champion, a World Cup runner-up and a high-quality and imaginative player who made himself available to his club and country. In Naples, he represented an institution, first as a player and then as a director.”

A minute’s silence will be held on pitches all over Italy at the weekend (including those scheduled for Monday) to remember Juliano.
