Gravina ahead of the UEFA meeting: “The priority is concluding the leagues and cups, then the European Championship”

Ahead of UEFA’s meeting with all 55 European Federations and the main stakeholders on Tuesday in an attempt to find a solution in redesigning the calendar of European football in light of the COVID-19 emergency, FIGC President Gabriele Gravina spoke to SportMediaset XXL about Italy’s stance on the matter: “We will propose to UEFA that the European Championship is postponed in order to conclude the league season: we believe that it’s fairer and more appropriate to give a definitive ending to the season after all of the sacrifices, efforts and investments made by our clubs.”

Gravina explained: “Italy is two weeks ahead compared to other countries, so what we can plan today the others would find difficult to, because they still don’t know the exact scale of the problem. We want to complete the league seasons and it’s clear that the biggest obstacle is the presence of the Euros, an event for which we too have invested so much energy and made so many sacrifices. We’ll address this issue on Tuesday.”

Gravina then spoke of the possibility of finishing off the league seasons: “We’ve assumed a deadline of 30 June, but I would not rule out the possibility of a slight extension with the adoption of urgent measures from both a sporting and governmental point of view. We need to look at our options for the calendar, without forgetting that in addition to Serie A we have other leagues that need to be concluded too. And we must not overlook the completion of our international competitions, the Champions League and Europa League.”
