Green Sports Hub's tool for sports organisations to analyse environmental impact

On the occasion of Earth Day 2023, Green Sports Hub Europe presented a new tool, with which sports organisations can self-analyse their environmental impact and improve the carbon footprint of their activities.

Sport, in all its forms, has always been in constant evolution, which has produced considerable improvements in terms of innovation in the organisation and commercial practices, as well as athletic performance. At the same time as this progress and expansion, so too has the environmental impact increased. Sporting organizations have in recent years shown greater attention to sustainability but to reach an accomplished level of sustainability in the sports industry, there is a clear need to introduce constant “better practices” in various areas.

However much we begin to reduce our impact on the planet, it is still difficult to assess our performance on the environment and climate. The issues we face are numerous: waste, transport, caring for biodiversity, energy, natural resources and much more. But how is it possible to operate within the confines of the resources available? The new “Self-Evaluation System” is aimed at helping sports organisations to identify areas, in which they can improve their practices in order to mitigate environmental impact. This is done by looking at six specific modules: event management, natural environment, governance, resource management, structures and services, and event/venue selection.

Regardless of being a leader or a novice in the field of sustainability, the time has come for sports organisations to embark on this path.
