1962 World Cup and 'the battle of Santiago': photos donated to the Museo del Calcio

Over sixty years have passed since Chile hosted the 1962 World Cup, the seventh in football history. An edition that certainly does not evoke fond memories for the Azzurri, after Italy were knocked out in the first round in an infamous match against the hosts, which went down in history as 'the battle of Santiago'. The Azzurri - ending the game with nine men due to two red cards in the first half - lost 2-0 in a fiery match to say the least.

In 2018, in a cellar in Chile, the negatives of over a thousand photographs taken in that edition of the World Cup were found: an extraordinary discovery, which gave rise to the project by journalist Rubén Martinez, who is creating a documentary entitled '1100 photographs of an impossible world' (1100 fotografìas de un mundial imposible). As can be seen from the title of the film, that World Cup was defined as 'impossible' because only two years before the competition, on 22 May 1960, in Valdivia, Chile, there was the strongest earthquake ever recorded by seismic instruments. Despite everything, that edition was still held in the South American country.

The images found belonged to photographer Juan Luco Valenzuela, who also collected photos of his colleagues relating to that edition of the World Cup. And the journalist Martinez, in the making of the documentary, came to Coverciano together with his crew to donate six of those images - both prints and digital files - to the football museum. His 'tour' will then continue to Serbia, Germany and Switzerland, at the FIFA Museum, to bring other photographs discovered from that 1962 World Cup.

To mark the occasion, another gift was also given to the Museo del Calcio by the collector Enrique Norambuena Carrasco: a ticket to enter the stadium to watch the game that would later become known as 'the battle of Santiago'. It is another piece of memorabilia - brought to Coverciano by the documentary crew - that enriches the Museo del Calcio collection.
