Ahead of Austria vs. Italy: final training session at Coverciano before departure for Vienna

The Azzurri will have their final training session this afternoon at Coverciano before departing for Vienna tomorrow morning. After Roberto Mancini’s press conference, they will make their final preparations at the Ernst Happel Stadion at 18.00 CET, on the eve of the friendly with Austria. Sandro Tonali and Pasquale Mazzocchi will not take part after leaving the group yesterday and returning to their respective clubs. The AC Milan midfielder was injured on Wednesday in Tirana during the first half of the friendly against Albania, while the Salernitana defender sprained his right knee in a training session yesterday.

Sunday’s friendly (20.45 CET, live on Rai1 – refereed by German official Dingert) will be the last fixture of 2022 for Roberto Mancini's side who aim to round off the year with a fourth consecutive win. The head-to-head record with Austria favours Italy with 18 wins, 8 draws and 12 losses, remaining unbeaten in the last 60 years, after going winless in the first ten encounters. The last game between the two sides dates back to the finals of EURO 2020, when goals from Chiesa and Pessina gave us the win in extra time (2-1).

Before the game, a minute's silence will be held in memory of former Austria forward Gerhard Rodax, who tragically died recently at the age of 57. Rodax made 20 appearances for the Austrians, playing in the 1990 World Cup in  Italy where he scored in the game against the USA.
