Following the Under-21 National Team’s elimination from the European Championship, Luigi Di Biagio today announced his resignation during a press conference in Bologna. “As of July 1st I will no longer be Head Coach,” said Di Biagio. “My experience ends here. I think that it’s only right to separate results from the past few years to that of what happened during European Championships. If relaunching Italian football was one of the main objectives, then I can say that a great job has been done, helping important youngsters develop and with many players moving up to the National Team. Even during this European Championship, we were competitive against strong opponents. We played well and we had the most shots on goal. However, the final result leaves a bitter taste. I am the one responsible and I can’t say I'm happy with the result but it’s not a failure for me.” Di Biagio was keen to stress that the blame lies solely on the Azzurrini’s shoulders, without looking for excuses after the draw between France and Romania. He also expressed thanks to everyone he’s worked with over the past few years.
