Onofrietti and Bruno give Italy their second victory over Romania

A second friendly against Romania, a second win, and another satifying day. After last Thursday's win at stadio Alfredo Viviani in Potenza, the Under 18s once again beat the Romanians. At the stadio Donato Curcio in Picerno, Daniele Franceschini's side won 2-0 with a goal in each half, courtesy of Vincenzo Onofrietti Teixeira (Borussia Dortmund) and Kevin Bruno (Sassuolo), who also scored in the first game. As well as the great performance on the pitch, there was lots to admire of it, too, with 1,500 fans in attendance - 1,000 of those being student and youth team players who came en masse to Picerno thanks to the work from the FIGC Scholastic and Youth departments, the Ministry of Education, Basilicata's Regional Committee and AZ Picerno football club.

"We end what has been a fantastic week for so many apsects," commented Franceschini. "Everything went perfectly: on the field, the lads have trained to their maximum and given two great performances; off the field, we've had two stadiums full with lots of young people and enthusiasm. I want to thank once again the people of Basilicata: it's always great to see so many people and lots of young people from football schools in the stands supporting us; seeing them in their Azzurri shirts is great and they are leading the way. As well as the performances, we've also added two positive results, that are always welcome and breeds confidence and spirit."

Franceschini selected a completely different starting eleven to the one from Thursday: Di Bartolo in goal; Casali, D'Avino, Romani and Saiani made up the back four; Parravicini, Rosetti and Onofrietti in midfield, with Quieto in behind the front two of Franzoni and Mazzone. And it was the Wolfsburg forward, Mazzone, who had the first chance of the game with a backheel attempt that made Romanian goalkeeper, Becze, work, after Parravicini's low cross in. But midway through the first half, Onofrietti broke the deadlock with a left-footed strike from inside the box. Before the break, Romania had the chance to get themselves back on level terms, but Saiani did well to clear off the line from a corner.

Italy showed their class in the second half to seal the game. Five minutes in, Quieto got weaved his way past three players, but his shot went just wide. Then, after changes made by Franceschini, Di Maggio, Ciammaglichella and Bruno all linked up well to double their side's lead in the second of four minutes of added-time: the Torino player's assist for the Sassuolo striker gave Bruno the chance to make it 2-0 and he didn't fail. At the end of the game, there were celebrations on and off the field for the Azzurrini's second win in 72 hours.
