Sara Gama to retire from football

With a long message on her social media channels, also available on the Juventus website, Sara Gama has officially announced her retirement from football at the end of the season. Sara's journey has been a wonderful one, starting in Trieste and leading her to become an icon of Italian football, not only for her achievements on the pitch, but also as a protagonist in a movement that has taken the sport to a new dimension and brought female players recognition as professionals. She has won 13 trophies with Juventus: six league titles, including the one already won this season, which will be celebrated on Saturday 10 May at the Allianz Stadium after the match against Inter, three coppe italia and four supercoppe italiane. In addition, she won four trophies with Brescia: one league title, one coppa italia and two supercoppe italiane.

‘Being able to share these years with a woman of Sara Gama's calibre is and will remain a privilege for all of us,’ said FIGC president Gabriele Gravina. 'Today marks the end of a chapter, that of the extraordinary footballer that Sara has been, both with the Italy team and with Juventus, but also for the values she continues to convey and for her contribution to the growth of the entire movement. I am certain that her presence in the world of football will continue to be an inspiration for thousands of girls who have grown up dreaming of becoming Sara Gama.’

‘In Italian football, there is a before and after Sara Gama,’ explains the president of the Women's Serie A Division, Federica Cappelletti. ’Sara has been at the forefront of a cultural change that continues every day: an awareness that football is one thing, without distinction of gender. On behalf of all women, we would like to thank Sara, an extraordinary leader in a thousand battles, and Gama, a top-level footballer who contributed to the success of the clubs that had the honour of having her on the pitch and to the results of our Italy team.’

On 19 February last year, Gama also officially announced her retirement from the Italian national team, celebrated four days later at Viola Park during a friendly match against Northern Ireland.

This is the message dedicated to Sara Gama on the FIGC Femminile social media channels.

For all the times you put your heart and soul into the game.

For all the times you fought tooth and nail off the pitch for the players of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

For all the times your professionalism and determination left a mark on the people you met.

For all the times you were on the front line without ever taking a step back.

For all the times that girls in this country have dreamed of making football their life and their job.

For all this and much more, 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗲 Sara Gama.

Legend of Italian football.
