The Spalletti era: all the stats

Luciano Spalletti took charge of the National Team on 1 September 2023. He’s since been at the helm for 18 matches (six Euro qualifying games, four friendlies, four European Championship finals fixtures and four Nations League games), winning ten, drawing five and losing three. It means that he’s picked up 35 points from a possible 54 (an average of 1.94 per match). Italy’s goal difference under Spalletti stands at +14, with the team having scored 32 (1.62 per match) and conceded 15 (0.93 per match, six clean sheets). Out of the 1620 minutes played since the start of his tenure, the Azzurri have led for 677 minutes (41.7%), been level for 749 minutes (46.2%) and been behind for 195 minutes (12%).

THE GROUP. Spalletti has called up 58 players (Di Gregorio, Gabbia, Pisilli and D. Maldini being the latest newcomers) and fielded 44. Frattesi has made the most appearances (17), followed by Dimarco and Raspadori (16). However, Donnarumma is the player who has accumulated the most minutes (1350’), followed by Di Lorenzo (1214’) and Bastoni (1197’). There have been ten debutants: Udogie, Vicario, Cambiaso, Bellanova, Calafiori, Folorunsho, Brescianini, Pisilli, Maldini and Lucca.

GOALS. Italy’s 32 goals have been scored by 18 players: Frattesi (seven) has been the top scorer. Giovanni Di Lorenzo recently bagged his first Azzurri brace and became the fifth player to do so in the Spalletti era after Frattesi (Ukraine), Berardi (Malta), Chiesa (North Macedonia) and Retegui (Venezuela). Furthermore, in Udine, Di Lorenzo wore the captain’s armband for the first time, becoming the second Napoli player to do so after Lorenzo Insigne (4 June 2018). Italy have failed to score in four out of the 18 matches (Ukraine, Türkiye, Spain and Switzerland). At the other end of the pitch, the Azzurri have conceded at least one goal for eight consecutive matches and kept just four clean sheets since the current Head Coach took charge.
