A new pathway to becoming a football coach has been introduced, with one key feature: anyone wishing to take the lessons required to pursue a coaching career will be able to do so. What’s more, enthusiasts who simply want to learn more about the game and expand their knowledge will also be able to attend some lessons free of charge.
“We came up with this new format,” explains Mario Beretta, president of the Technical Sector, “with three objectives in mind: to support everyone who wants to become a coach; to provide free training for anyone keen to deepen their football knowledge without having to obtain a coaching qualification; and to offer even more targeted educational programmes according to the pathway chosen, with dedicated lessons for each course.”
So, how does the new process work?
From today, Monday 19 October, the introductory course is available online, free of charge and on demand, meaning participants can access it whenever they wish. Anyone can complete the 38 hours of online lessons, divided into 12 modules covering the following subjects: Sports Medicine (8 hours), Laws of the Game (6), FIGC Regulations (6), Physical and Athletic Preparation (4), Technique and Tactics (4), Women’s Football (2), Futsal (2), Safeguarding (2), Goalkeeping (1), Psychology (1), an AIAC session (1) and Para Football (1).
After completing the introductory course, participants can take the eligibility test. This consists of 60 multiple-choice questions, divided into four sections of 15 questions each, covering different subjects. The test takes place online during scheduled examination windows and requires payment. Passing it allows candidates to enrol on a regional UEFA C course within the following 24 months. To pass, candidates must answer at least nine out of 15 questions correctly in each of the four sections. Registration for the exam opens on 16 November.
In other words, anyone can complete the introductory course online, and everyone who passes the eligibility test will be able to attend a regional UEFA C course within the following 24 months.
UEFA C COURSES Due to begin in January 2027,will be held throughout Italy, with no restrictions based on place of residence. For example, someone living in Milan will also be able to attend classes in Genoa. When applying, candidates can indicate two additional provinces, besides their province of residence, in which they would be willing to attend a UEFA C course. Places will be allocated according to the scores achieved in the eligibility test.
The UEFA C course will comprise 110 hours of lessons, including work experience and club visits, spread over approximately eight weeks. Subjects already covered during the introductory course will not be repeated in the curriculum.
