After their narrow 1–0 victory over the hosts, Qatar, Italy’s Under-18 National Team will be back in action tomorrow, Thursday, 6 November (15:30 local time / 13:30 CET), on Pitch 3 of the Aspire Zone in Doha. They will face the Bolivian side in the second matchday of Group A at the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar, currently underway.
Massimiliano Favo warned: “It won’t be an easy match given that Bolivia, like all South American teams, play with both technical skill and great determination. They lost 3–1 to South Africa in their debut, so they’ll be looking to turn things around against us. We know this is an important game because a win could pave the way to the round of 16 with one match to spare.”
The Azzurrini, who trained yesterday at the Al Erssal sports centre, will have their usual final session this afternoon to iron out the details ahead of tomorrow’s match.
THE OPPONENT. Bolivia, led by the Argentinian manager Jorge Damián Perrotta, qualified for the Under-17 World Cup as a result of finishing seventh in the South American Championship. After finishing fourth in Group B with three points, one win, a 1–0 victory over Uruguay (1 April), and three losses: 2–0 against Venezuela (28 March), 3–0 against Brazil (30 March), and 2–1 against Ecuador (3 April), they were then defeated 3–0 to Argentina in the 5th–8th place semi-final, before beating Ecuador in the 7th-place playoff, thanks to a goal in the 52nd minute from 2008-born Bolivian winger Santos García Cuéllar.
This is the Bolivian national team’s first appearance at the Under-17 World Cup, after two previous ones in 1985 (China) and 1987 (Canada), both of which ended at the group stage. At that time, the tournament was exclusively for Under-16 teams. Tomorrow’s match will see the first game in history between Italy and Bolivia in this category.
