An unreal match, a huge win in the quest for a place at the World Cup. After the 5-0 win against Estonia, The Azzurri put five goals past Israel, gaining their third consecutive win in the group and taking second place from Ben Simon's side. The Azzurri are still three points behind Norway, who will host Moldova in Oslo.
Everything happened in the match in Debrecen. Italy struggled, went behind twice and then came back thanks to a super display from Moise Kean, and then goals from Politano, Jack Raspadori and Sandro Tonali in the 91st minute.
Gennaro Gattuso analysed the match: "They surprised us a bit at the start, but every time we went forward, we put them under pressure. Today, we weren't quite there with the running, but it's always like that when you play the second match. We got the win, which was the most important thing. We conceded some silly goals. We are fragile, we concede goals too easily. It's not a criticism of the players, it's my problem that I have to sort with my staff. I have to credit the lads, who had the desire to deal with every heavy blow. Despite not being a brilliant night, we showed heart and desire to react, this is something we have to continue working on. We deserve it, the past few days have been great, but if we want to achieve something important, we have to improve".
STARTING OFF. Gattuso started with the pairing of Kean and Retegui, reinforcing the midfield with Locatelli, with the team taking a 4-3-3 shape having Kean play out wide on the left and Politano on the right. Zaccagni was out while Mancini replace Calafiori. The game got off to a quick start with Israel taking the lead from a corner, but the referee ruled it out for a foul from Lemki. Italy went behind in the 16th minute when Locatelli turned the ball into his own net from Biton's cross. The Azzurri struggled to make anything stick and risked going 2-0 down. Ben Simon's side continued putting the Azzurri under pressure and pressed high.
SUPER KEAN. At the half-hour mark, Locatelli had the chance to equalise, but his effort hit the crossbar. Kean also went close from Mancini's cross, but his effort went wide. In the 40th minute, Moise grabbed the equaliser thanks to Retegui's assist. In the second half, Italy changed gear but found themselves behind thanks to a Dor Peretz goal, following some good individual work from Solomon. Kean then equalised just two minutes later, scoring his third goal in two matches. Then, Politano secured the lead thanks to another Retegui assist. For the first time in the match, Israel had to bounce back.
A THRILLING FINALE. Ben Simon played another card, sending Baribo on. Gattuso replied by sending on Frattesi and Orsolini. Solomon kept proving to be a threat but Donnarumma managed to quash the danger. Raspadori, who just entered the field, scored his eleventh goal for the National Team, his fourth in his last five games. The win looked secured, but three minutes from the end, Bastoni turned the ball into his own net from Revivo's cross. Dor Peretz then scored to make it 4-4. Incredible scenes but it wasn't over yet. In the first minute of stoppage time, Sandro Tonali, scored the winner to secure an incredibly important win for the Azzurri. The qualification path will continue in October against Estonia and Israel before the final two group matches in Moldova and then in Milan against Norway. Four matches to decide our fate. There's lots to play for.
