Following the wins against Luxembourg and Greece, the Azzurri have retained 12th place in the FIFA Rankings, published today. Argentina
have returned to the top after nearly a year away, moving up two places following their friendly wins against Iceland and Honduras. Spain remain second, while France drop two places to third. The only other change in the top ten sees Morocco rise to seventh (a best-ever ranking) at the expense of the Netherlands, who fall to eighth.
Behind Italy, Mexico climb one place to 14th and Uruguay move up to 16th, while Senegal drop one place to 15th and the United States fall to 17th. Among the biggest movers inside the top 100, Hungary (39th, +3), Chile (51st, +3), and China (91st, +3) recorded the strongest rises, while Serbia (41st, -4), Mali (55th, -3), and Benin (93rd, -3) suffered the sharpest declines.
The FIFA Rankings will serve as a tiebreaker at the World Cup to determine the standings within a group when two or more teams are level at the end of the group stage, and to identify the eight best third-placed sides who will advance to the round of 32 if teams finishing third remain tied after the application of criteria 1 and 2 of the regulations. The next FIFA Ranking will be published on 20 July, the day after the World Cup Final.
