Mention Luxembourg and Greece, and a smile immediately appears on Giancarlo Antognoni’s face. Understandably so: two of his seven goals for Italy came against the Azzurri’s next opponents in the friendlies scheduled for 3 and 7 June. But rather than dwelling on the past, the 1982 World Cup champion is looking to the future: to an Italy side looking to close the season by laying the foundations to return to the international centre-stage again as soon as possible.

You will be Head of Delegation for Italy’s next two matches. What sort of Italy side should we expect for the friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece?

“The best one possible at this point in time, centred around building motivation and a long-term vision. I’ve read about some controversy in Greece regarding the absence of experienced players, but to be honest, I don’t understand it — this is not a sign of disrespect towards our opponents. It won’t be Italy Under-21s taking the field, but rather a young and strong Italy senior team. There will be many talented players involved: some are already regular members of the senior National Team setup, while others are players Silvio Baldini knows very well after coaching them successfully over these past nine months with the Under-21s. I’m convinced many of them will form the backbone of Italy’s future.”

Will they be part of the Italy side that, we all hope, plays at the 2030 World Cup?

“Exactly. In fact, I’m convinced many of these players will receive call-ups in September, when Italy begin their campaign in the next edition of the Nations League. We’re talking about players already making their mark in Serie A, the Premier League, the Bundesliga and other European competitions — footballers with important experience and several goals to their name.”

Giancarlo Antognoni and Silvio Baldini

You made your Italy debut at the age of 20 against a certain Johan Cruyff. Can you relate to the emotions of the players about to make their Azzurri debut?

“I remember the feeling — even after so many years, it’s impossible to forget. It was important to have more experienced teammates by my side, like the legendary Dino Zoff, whose charisma and advice helped me settle into the group. For that reason, the presence of Gigio Donnarumma will be invaluable for the young players who walk through the gates of Coverciano.”

Would you like to make a promise to the Italian fans?

“I can only say that they will be proud of these boys — our future starts now. I would also like to say a few words about Silvio Baldini. He is a great coach and a genuine person. He deserved this opportunity to lead the senior team, and I’m convinced he is the right man to guide these young players through an experience they will never forget.”
