It’s a wonderful achievement for the Azzurre, fresh off an evening that granted them passage to the EUROs quarter-finals, something that Italy women haven’t managed since 2013. Just like in the first two matches of the 2025 EUROs, Spain inflicted defeat (1-3), meaning Italy finished in second place, receiving really good TV ratings, showing the strong link between Andrea Soncin’s team and Italian fans: the match with the reigning world champions was watched by 1.36 million viewers on Rai 2, with a TV share of 9.7%.
It’s an important following that is bound to grow both in the stadium and on TV on Wednesday in Geneva against Norway (live at 21:00 CEST). After the match, FIGC deputy vice president and AIC president Umberto Calcagno said: “The game against Spain was an important step in the growth of a group that has been on a path together for a long time. It is just a first step, as I am sure that the Azzurre are ready to reach new heights. They can do it counting on the support of their supporters, a clear growing fanbase in Italy but also here in Switzerland. The authenticity and the spirit of these girls has won everyone over and, above sport, the message conveyed to the outside world is really very nice.”
After returning to their headquarters in Weggis late into the night, this morning the team went to the Thermoplan Arena for a recovery session made up of gym work, foot-tennis matches and physio for those who played against Spain. Michela Cambiaghi and Annamaria Serturini were also present, and they made a great contribution when they came on in the second half, full of hard work and top quality. Juventus’ new striker spoke to Vivo Azzurro TV: “It was a crazy night and only today we are realising what we have done, we are very happy. We wrote a new page into our history books, but now we must look forward as we know we have a great opportunity. With heart, grit and a bit more transparency, we can continue chasing our dreams”.
‘Dream’ was the word being thrown around in the changing rooms. Serturini, who was so close to making it 2-2 shortly after coming on, added this: “It was a magic night that we had been imagining and chasing for so long. We managed to reach our goal and we don’t want to stop here but continue dreaming with the rest of Italy. We know Norway are a strong team but we will give everything and more to achieve our dream. The emotions at the end of the game in the huddle and the emotional gazes will remain in the memory and the heart of everyone on this splendid adventure.”
