THE AZZURRI IN MILAN. Italy will return to the Giuseppe Meazza exactly one year after their 4-1 defeat to Norway in the final match of their FIFA World Cup qualifying group, and two years after a 3-1 Nations League loss to France. The Azzurri have lost each of their last three matches played in Milan, ending an unbeaten home run in the city that had lasted almost a century - 96 years, to be exact. That streak stretched from the 2-1 defeat to Hungary in January 1925 at Campo Milan (following another loss to Hungary at the Arena Civica in 1911) until the 2-1 defeat to Spain at the Meazza in October 2021. Italy's biggest victory in Milan previously came against France, a 9-4 win on 18 January 1920. Austria are the opponents the Azzurri have faced most often in the city (six times), followed by Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary and Portugal (five each). Milan is the second-most frequent host city for the Italian national team after Rome, having staged 64 internationals to date, with a record of 39 wins, 19 draws and six defeats. It also served as the headquarters of the Italian Football Federation from 1905 to 1911. Across its history, the Azzurri have played in four different venues in the city: the Arena Civica, the Velodromo Sempione (demolished in 1928), Campo Milan on Viale Lombardia, and San Siro, which was officially named after Giuseppe Meazza on 3 March 1980.
